#10: It’s All In The Yato

Top 10 Times Anime Characters Lost Their Powers (ft. Todd Haberkorn)

“Gintama” (2006-18) Even if they are from the same clan, taunting this feisty alien teen probably isn’t a great idea. But when the overconfident Abuto calls her a disgrace to the Yato lineage, she shows him who’s really at the top of the family tree. While Kagura’s not totally in the driver's seat anymore, there’s still a certain glee in seeing the once-cocky antagonist try and flee from her destructive wrath. Really, Abuto just should be thankful she stopped him from killing Shinpachi, since the fellow Yorozuya member is the only one capable of quelling her rampage. Not too bad for a so-called “disgrace.”

#9: Shin’s Not-Too-Distant Future

“86” (2021-) The leader of the 86 Spearhead squadron has always been one of the most effective Juggernaut operators around, but now, it’s not just the enemy that should fear his skills. Frederica has a vision that Shin will eventually succumb to his bloodthirsty impulses, but she can only watch as he proves her worries right in a devastating display of his true nature. Despite the epic music and flashy mecha carnage, it’s hard to cheer him on when he mercilessly decimates the enemy with an eerie smile on his face. For him, this isn’t just a fight for survival anymore, it’s practically a sport, which turns what should be exciting action into something as chilling as a horror film.

#8: Inuyasha Overtaken

“Inuyasha” (2000-10) The final battle with Naraku is just about underway, but first, this crew of jewel hunters have to contend with someone unexpected - Inuyasha himself. When he wanders too close to the defiled sacred jewel, the titular hero awakens to his full-demon form. Even worse, the only person in his path is Kagome. But, even when Naraku tries to get her to fight back, she remains adamant that Inuyasha won’t mortally wound her. Kagome’s unwavering faith in her corrupted lover makes this a fantastic exclamation point on their relationship, and while they might need some couple’s counseling afterwards, at least they proved their love is stronger than even demonic miasma.

#7: Burn, Baby, Burn

“Fire Force” (2019-) Getting possessed by an evil pyrokinetic force may not be Shinra’s ideal afternoon, but on the bright side, he was already at a fire-station. When the malevolent First Pillar reduces his free will to ashes, Company 8’s eager soldier unleashes the Adolla Burst to burn, well, everything. Thankfully, there’s one thing Shinra’s got plenty of - and no, it’s not flames. Through sheer determination and willpower, plus an assist from one of Arthur’s Knight Kicks, Shinra extinguishes this fire before it spreads too far. It goes to show that even compared to a literal inferno spirit, nothing burns hotter than this guy’s red-hot passion to be a hero.

#6: Over-Yuu-sed

“Charlotte” (2015) The power to seize control of an enemy's body for five seconds at a time is incredibly busted in combat, but it comes with a hefty price tag - with each use, the user loses a bit of their memories and sanity. Yuu was far from the most stable character to begin with, and the looting ability’s side effects eventually saw his ideological crusade morph into an unrestrained frenzy. The bloody path he took he took to achieve his goal came at the cost of forgetting why he did it in the first place. In the end, his quest only proved that the one thing scarier than an overpowered teenager is one that’s lost any semblance of reason.

#5: Itadori the Avenger

“Jujutsu Kaisen” (2020-) He may be a vessel for the undisputed King of Curses, but Itadori is usually a pretty chipper guy - as long as you don’t hurt his friends, that is. When the mischievous Mahito heartlessly slays Yuji’s new comrade, Junpei, the novice jujutsu sorcerer is forced to grapple with the harsh reality that he can’t save everyone. That anger leads him to a chilling declaration: he isn’t just going to exorcize Mahito, he’s going to kill him. Yuji paints Mahito’s face red with his bare fists alone, and each brutal blow is a firm reminder that there’s darkness inside Itadori, and we don’t just mean Sukuna.

#4: Ichigo Goes Full Hollow

Every Bleach Ichigo Fight RANKED

“Bleach” (2004-12) Orihime may be a top-class healer, but even she can’t resurrect the dead. Thankfully, everyone’s favorite orange-haired Soul Reaper has that covered, though his inexplicable revival came with a few caveats. Namely, a gaping hole in his chest, the power to mop the floor with Ulquiorra, and, oh yeah, the fact he’s been completely overtaken by his inner Hollow. It was undeniably epic to see him tear the Espada member apart like an action figure, but his ruthless demeanor to both friend and foe alike made it clear this wasn’t the same Ichigo. If Ulquiorra hadn’t subdued him when he did, Ichigo may have returned only to wish he’d stayed dead.

#3: Beyond 100%

Top 20 Zero to Hero Anime Characters

“Mob Psycho 100” (2016-) Ask and ye shall receive. The self-proclaimed rival Teruki insisted on seeing Mob’s full strength, but he failed to realize that the bowl-cut teen’s abilities don’t top out at a measly 100%. When he’s knocked unconscious, Mob’s body begins to move on pure instinct, which unlocks a level of power that the series itself can’t quantify. Naturally, even Teruki’s supposedly ultimate barrier is nothing in the face of Mob’s true potential, which has got to sting even more since the overpowered psychic isn’t even awake for it. With this kind of innate aptitude for combat, it’s clear that when Mob says he can beat someone in his sleep, he isn’t speaking figuratively.

#2: Gon is Gone

Also in:

Top 20 Times Cocky Anime Characters Got DESTROYED

“Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14) This spiky-haired shonen hero maintained an earnest optimism through conflicts with assassin families and evil organizations, but everyone has a breaking point. When Neferpitou savagely murders Kite, Gon isn’t just blinded by rage, he’s consumed by it until he’s practically unrecognizable. Even though his Nen unnaturally matures his body, it’s the terrifying aura that makes it clear the old Gon is no longer there. At the risk of his Nen and his life, he delivers some of the most well-deserved but flinch-worthy punches in all of anime. Pitou may have deserved the thrashing, but this horrifying transformation leaves as many scars for Gon as it does for her.

#1: Mess With The Nezuko, Get The Horn

“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba” (2019-) Tanjiro’s sister has proven time and time again that she’s a soccer pro - provided the ball is a demon’s head, of course. But, thanks to some literal out-of-the-box thinking, she embraces her dark side and delivers some devastating kicks worthy of a red card. The terrifying new form is strong enough to put even an Upper Moon to shame, but it leaves her unable to resist the demonic hunger for human blood. As hype as it is to see her tear up the turf with Daki’s remains, it’s offset by the heartbreaking moment when Tanjiro has to restrain his sister from becoming what she hates. She saved her brother, but at the risk of losing everything that makes her Nezuko.
