http://www.WatchMojo.com and today we'll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Anticipated Releases of August 2017. For this list, we're taking a look at new releases in the realms of movies, music, and video games, as well as premieres of new TV series and new seasons of ongoing series.

#10: “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy” Release Date: August 22, 2017 [U.S.]

Nathan Drake’s journey may be over, but Naughty Dog is keeping the “Uncharted” franchise alive with this standalone expansion. “The Lost Legacy” shifts focus to fan favorite Chloe Frazer, who teams up with Nadine Ross to find the Tusk of Ganesh. Along the way, players can expect the same character-driven storytelling, exotic locations, and edge of your seat action that put this series on the map. Throw in the original “Jak and Daxter” as a preorder bonus and you’ve got a treasure well worth uncovering.

#9: “Death Note” Release Date: August 25, 2017 [U.S.]

Harambe Spotted, Real Kiss of Death & N. Korea Missile Party: The Dispatch #34

Between the hit manga and anime series, “Death Note” is easily among the most beloved properties to come out of Japan in recent years. While there have also been a few live-action adaptations, this Netflix original movie marks Hollywood’s first crack at the source material. Granted, the otaku community wasn’t exactly blown away by the western versions of “Dragon Ball” and “Ghost in the Shell”. With Adam Wingard of “You're Next” and “The Guest” directing, though, “Death Note” will hopefully be a guiding light.

#8: “Villains” by Queens of the Stone Age Release Date: August 25, 2017

It’s been just over twenty years since this American rock group formed and they’re still going strong with their seventh studio album, Villains. In a unique marketing strategy, the album was announced through a comedy sketch where the band receives a lie detector test from Liam Lynch. This preview included an excerpt of their song, “Feet Don't Fail Me,” and the single, “The Way You Used To Do”, was unveiled shortly after. Could this be “the best album ever?” The polygraph suggests so!

#7: “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later” Release Date: August 4, 2017

Also in:

Top 10 Most Anticipated Releases of June 2017

While not a success upon release, “Wet Hot American Summer” has since become a comedy cult classic. This paved the way for a Netflix prequel series centering on the first day of camp. Now it’s time for another reunion set ten years later. Featuring a cast of mad, mad, mad, mad proportions, this sequel series will reportedly have echoes of “St. Elmo's Fire” and “The Big Chill” while still maintaining the off-the-wall absurdity we’ve come to expect from Camp Firewood.

#6: “Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update” Release Date: August 10, 2017

If you can’t wait for the next season of SNL, don’t worry. Colin Jost and Michael Che are returning sooner than you think. The anchors are set to take part in four half-hour “Weekend Update” segments, which will air during primetime. Given everything that’s going on in the world right now, we could certainly use a comedic take on current events. Speaking of which, we wonder if President Trump and Sean Spicer will drop by to discuss Russia, the FBI, and the bizarre reality we live in.

#5: “Sonic Mania” Release Date: August 15, 2017 [U.S.]

Just when we were ready to give up on Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega announced the 2D throwback fans have been waiting years for. This side-scrolling platformer returns Sonic to his Genesis roots with sprite-based graphics, old school music, and his two best companions! Featuring both new zones and remastered stages, “Sonic Mania” could get the Blue Blur back on track. Is it a fool’s wish? Perhaps. But maybe, just maybe, Sonic will remind us why he became a gaming icon almost 25 years ago.

#4: “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” Release Date: August 18, 2017 [U.S.]

Also in:

Top 10 Most Anticipated Releases of November 2017

Remember “The Bodyguard” with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston? Well, imagine if Costner was replaced with Ryan Reynolds. Now imagine if Houston was replaced with Samuel L. Jackson. Oh, and instead of being a pop star, Jackson’s character is an assassin. That’s the setup for “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” a film that reminds us that even deadly killers need backup sometimes. Whether this buddy comedy hits its target or not, the official poster is bound to be among the funniest things you’ll see all month.

#3: “Logan Lucky” Release Date: August 18, 2017 [U.S.]

Back in 2001, director Steven Soderbergh breathed new life into the heist genre with “Ocean’s Eleven.” In “Logan Lucky,” Soderbergh enlists another all-star cast for a big score. Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Riley Keough star as siblings that aim to rob the Coca-Cola 600 race. Along the way, Daniel Craig trades in his English accent for a Southern persona as Joe Bang. As far as crime comedies go, let’s see if “Logan Lucky” gives “Baby Driver” a run for its money.

#2: “The Dark Tower” Release Date: August 4, 2017 [U.S.]

Also in:

Top 10 Most Anticipated Releases of October 2017

For almost a decade, Hollywood has been trying to adapt Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” book series for the silver screen. The project finally landed in the lap of director Nikolaj Arcel with Idris Elba as The Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Black. Acting as a continuation of the novels, the film will follow Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, an eleven-year-old torn between dimensions in a battle that may bring about hell on earth. Hey, at least he doesn’t have to deal with any homicidal clowns.

#1: “The Defenders” Release Date: August 18, 2017

Also in:

Top 10 Most Anticipated Releases of September 2017

“The Defenders” is an event that’s been in the making for nearly two years now. Marvel and Netflix got off to a stellar start with “Daredevil.” They kept the momentum going with “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage.” And while “Iron Fist” wasn’t the knockout we were hoping for, that hasn’t diminished our expectations for this epic crossover. Bringing together four of the most tormented heroes the MCU has to offer, “The Defenders” promises to be the franchise’s most ambitious team up since the Avengers first assembled. Do you agree with our list? What release has you the most pumped up for August? For more entertaining Top 10s published every day, be sure to subscribe to WatchMojo.com.
