Dawn Dumont is a Plains Cree writer from Canada who published multiple books throughout the 2010s and early 2020s. She also ran as a Liberal candidate in a Saskatoon riding for the 2021 federal election. One year later, on July 24, 2022, Dumont’s abandoned vehicle was found near a park. Both she and her young child were declared missing. Those close to Dumont suspected foul play, and she was considered another victim of the human rights epidemic targeting Indigenous women in Canada. She remained missing for nearly two weeks until both she and her son were found in Oregon. Dumont was allegedly fleeing from domestic trouble and had staged her own death. She was subsequently charged with serious offenses, including identity theft and parental abduction.

A 67-year-old Vermont woman named Anne Dickinson was reported missing on September 23, 2022. She was found exactly one week later. Search and rescue units were scouring some local train tracks when they came across a healthy Dickinson, who was camping near a business called Suburban Propane. Two days before she was declared missing, employees at the company had interacted with Dickinson, allowing her to use their phone and spotting her on the nearby train tracks. She had reportedly walked the three miles from her apartment to her camping site. A friend claims Dickinson was going through a mound of personal struggles, including the recent death of her son.

Independent country music artist Luke Bell released three studio albums between 2012 and 2016, and two more singles followed throughout the years. Bell disappeared on August 20th of 2022 in Tucson, Arizona. His friend had gone to grab some food, leaving Bell alone in the truck. By the time he returned, the musician was gone. Bell was declared a missing person and remained as such for the next nine days. On the 29th, Bell was found deceased not far from where he’d disappeared. He had reportedly died three days earlier with BDP ostensibly having played a role. The Pima County Medical Examiner's Office later revealed that he had succumbed to a fentanyl overdose.

Connerjack Oswalt

Connerjack Oswalt was 16 years old when he disappeared from Clearlake, California in September of 2019. On April 9, 2022, Utah deputies spotted a shivering man and offered him a spot in their car to warm up. They requested to fingerprint the man, and he agreed. They found a match and contacted Oswalt’s mom who revealed he had a distinct birthmark on the back of his neck, which was also a match. With that, Oswalt was found after two and a half years. It’s unclear what the teen had been doing during this time but, if one thing’s for sure, his parents were ecstatic to hear the good news.

Hoang Vinh Le

An intense family dispute impacted the life of Vietnamese-Australian toddler Hoang Vinh Le. Vinh was in the custody of his grandmother when he was taken by his biological father on April 9, 2021. His parents continued to hide Vinh throughout the following months and refused to cooperate with neither the media, nor the law. In fact, Vinh’s mother received a prison sentence of six months for her refusal to divulge information that might lead to his whereabouts. The case remained cold until September 2022, when Vinh was apparently left at a daycare by an unknown woman. Staff recognized the missing baby and informed the authorities, who contacted Vinh’s grandmother. While Vinh is now safe, we still don’t know where he was during the months he was missing.

Bruno Pereira & Dom Phillips

In early June of 2022, British journalist Dom Phillips met with Bruno Pereira, a Brazilian scholar and activist of Indigenous interests. The two had planned to conduct journalistic work on indigenous cultures when they went missing in the territory of Vale do Javari. Authorities received a tip pointing them in the direction of a man named Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira. Various belongings were found on Oliveira’s property, and his speedboat contained traces of human blood. On June 15, Oliveira confessed to taking part in the killings of both Pereira and Phillips, and revealed the locations of their bodies. Three men were charged with the crime, including Oliveira and his brother.

Ezra Miller

While once a successful actor seen in the likes of “Fantastic Beasts” and “Justice League,” Ezra Miller has recently come under fire for their bizarre and problematic behavior. In 2016, the then 23-year-old Miller met Tokata Iron Eyes, a 12-year-old who Miller is said to have groomed. The parents of Iron Eyes attempted to issue a restraining order against Miller in June of 2022, but the authorities were unable to locate them. This prompted the technically missing Miller to taunt the police on their Instagram account. Miller was seen the following August when police were responding to a separate inquiry at their Vermont farm.

Paislee Shultis

Four-year-old Paislee Shultis was under the care of her legal guardian when she was declared missing in 2019. Various tips were placed throughout the years, telling police to look into Shultis’ biological parents. They followed up on these tips but were unable to scour the entire house due to the owners’ legal rights. But, in February of 2022, police finally secured a search warrant that gave them lawful access to the entire house. They found a child’s room in the basement, and one detective spotted something odd about a nearby staircase. Police tore apart the stairs and found Shultis hiding with her mother. She was found after more than two years, and her biological parents were charged with the felony of custodial interference.

Brandon Gabriel Cairney

The story of British Columbia man Brandon Cairney is an odd one. Cairney was first reported missing back in October of 2017, and he remained missing for the next five years. It was a rather hefty concern because Cairney was said to have had a brain injury at the time. In September of 2022, a man was spotted sleeping in a public park. Authorities took the man’s fingerprints, and they matched those of Brandon Cairney’s. However, this story does not have a happy ending. Despite the fingerprints being an exact match, the man claims that he is not Cairney and it seems he doesn’t wish to be contacted by family or confirm his identity.

Holly Marie Clouse

Imagine a loved one being missing for over forty years before you get news that they’ve been found alive and well. This is exactly what happened to Donna Casasanta, when she received news that her granddaughter, Holly Marie Clouse, had been found. Back in 1981, baby Holly and her biological parents, Tina and Dean, disappeared. In 2021, DNA testing finally identified a pair of bodies as those of the Clouses. From there, the Clouses’ daughter, Holly, was also located and identified, very much alive and now in her 40s. Following the death of her parents, Clouse was picked up by what is described as a “nomadic religious group” and dropped off at a church. She then went to live with an adopted family.
